Tom Sweeney approached the Society in 1998 when the
existing service to Traveller children was being withdrawn due
to lack of funds.
Tom’s role has been crucial in being a bridge between
the Travellers and the Society and in helping us to interpret
the needs and wishes of the community as a whole. He has worked
shoulder to shoulder with the Society when representing the poor
basic living conditions on site to the local authority, which
has led to more than £1 million refit of kitchen, bathroom
and washing facilities, which bring conditions up to an
acceptable standard. Tom’s role within the wider Traveller
movement has also grown in stature with him being appointed as
Co-Chair of the Irish Traveller Movement in Britain.
