The Bishop Harvey Family Service
The Bishop Harvey Family Service was established in 1994 and is based in Muswell Hill, North West London.
Bishop Harvey Family Service has developed a special model of short-term intervention in response to a growing awareness of the need for greater support for children and young people with emotional and behavioural difficulties. Children are referred to us for a wide range of reasons such as sleep and eating disorders, tantrums, behavioural difficulties, lack of concentration, under achievement and emotional or behavioural difficulties resulting from a wide range of effects including bereavement, loss, developmental issues and stress.
Bishop Harvey Family Service receives referrals of children and families from a broad cultural spectrum and equality of access is actively promoted regardless of ethnic and religious backgrounds. BHFS' treatment, which is unique among voluntary organisations, centres on prevention by dealing with problems before they get out of hand and supporting families though the process. This helps to overcome the obstacles posed by poor mental health or educational under achievement to children's full participation in society.
Our Work
Our services have been designed and developed to be friendly, accessible and responsive to the needs of children and their families. The service links in to the work of other health professionals and teachers.
Effectiveness
Research has demonstrated that early psychotherapeutic intervention is effective in preventing serious mental illness in adult life. By our approach, which is to intervene at the earliest possible stage, we aim to improve family functioning and help children learn to cope so that they can be restored to mental health.
The goal of our therapists is to enable each child to progress to a point where they no longer require treatment. We expect each child to experience an improvement in their personal development, ability to see their problem in context, success in socialising with others and ability to achieve their academic potential.
Our success in providing support for the schools from which we draw many of our referrals is demonstrated by a reduction in pupil exclusions and suspensions and, among teachers, through greater confidence in their ability to deal with pupils with emotional and behavioural problems.
